Birds: Roadrunner

The Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is well adapted to live throughout the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and southern Great Basin deserts of the United States and Mexico. They can run up to 15 miles per hour, and seems to prefer sprinting to flying. It belongs to the cuckoo family.

Notes

We got to see numerous Roadrunners when we lived in Tucson, but never had the opportunity to snap a photo. On our February 2007 trip to Death Valley National Park we spotted several in the Furnace Creek area. The main photo on this page, as well as the three listed under Photos, were taken just outside of the Furnace Creek Visitor's Center. A tour bus load of passengers were standing around taking photos of this showoff. She seemed to be enjoying the attention and posing for the cameras. In the photo of the pair you'll notice the vivid colors on the side of the head of the male, as compared to the more drab markings of the female.
