Canyon Country Animals
Birds: Swallows and Martins
There are all sorts of swallows throughout the west. They build their packed mud nests under ledges along cliffs and swarm around hikers along open slopes as they stir up flying insects. They look like small jets and can create quite a rush of air as they zoom by. They tend to be small and very aerodynamic.

Notes
- The main photo on this page was taken in Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge in Utah. The photos of swallow nests were taken in Fremont Indian State Park, Utah and Nine Mile Canyon, Utah.
- We see a wide variety of swallows all over the canyon country. We love to stand along a remote cliff edge and watch the swallows zip past in their pursuit of a meal. Sometimes they sound like little rockets blasting by. Of course, their speed makes it difficult to capture their image.
