Scientific Name: Scorpionida

Although not really an insect, the small, straw-colored desert scorpion likes to lurk under rocks and logs, and can give a sting that can be life threatening to small children. There are many varieties of scorpions in a range of sizes. Generally they come out at night, but be cautious of where you sit, even during the day.

 Notes

It's hard to get a photo of these little critters. We usually see them in the evening (when we do see them) when it is dusky and the lighting isn't quite right.

We have both been stung by scorpions and survived. In our experience they felt like really nasty bee or wasp stings and burned for quite some time. Anne got stung on the foot in our home in Tucson, Arizona. I was stung on the back of the leg as I rested on my sleeping bag at the Cottonwood Campground along the Main Corridor in Grand Canyon National Park.
