Arthropods: Spiders: Black Widow Spider

Scientific Name: Latrodectus hesperus

The beautiful, long-legged, shiny black spiders can be identified by the distinctive red hourglass mark on their underside and their primitive, randomly spun web. They generally come out after dark, and hang upside down within their web, awaiting their prey, revealing the hourglass. Be cautious, they can inflict a dangerous bite.

Scientific Name: Loxosceles reclusa

The bite of this seldom seen spider may go unnoticed for several days until there is extensive tissue damage at the site. However, the bite is not generally life threatening.
