 Domestic Animals
Young cow.

Grazing occurs in some desert areas, so you may encounter cattle and other domesticated animals, such as horses, sheep, and an occasional burro. Generally, cattle are used to humans and either avoid you or move away. It is possible that a bull could be dangerous, so it's a good idea to give cattle some space as you pass.

 Burro
Burro from South the Black Hills of Dakota.

Scientific Name: Equus asinus

These photos were taken in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The burros there are so used to people that they come right up to your vehicle and beg for food. I first saw these critters in this area back in 1957.

 Notes

Steer in Pipe Springs National Monument. In the west, on the open range, these large, slow moving animals are sometimes jokingly referred to as Slow Elk.

The photos on this page were taken at various locations throughout the west. It is not unusual to run into range cattle and sometimes wild horses.
