Canyon Country Animals
Mammals: Mountain Goat
Scientific Name: Oreamnos americanus
The Mountain Goat is a blunt, squarish-looking animal with a narrow head with slender, dark, shiny horns rising in a backward curve to a length of 10-12 inches. The coat is white, and there is a double beard of long hair on the chin.
Mountain Goats weighing, on average, between 150 and 300 pounds and reach heights of 35 to 45 inches. The mountain goat is sure-footed and agile due to its hooves, which have cushioned skid-proof pads that add extra grip.
The Mountain Goat lives in rocky, mountainous areas above the timberline throughout parts of North America.
