This is desert country:

Summer temperatures exceed 100 degrees F., with afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. The rain often evaporates before reaching the ground.
Rare prolonged summer rains are associated with tropical disturbances that occasionally move from the Pacific Ocean, across Mexico and into this area.
Winters have milder temperatures—60 to 80 degrees—and longer periods of rain, which can create a brilliant tapestry of desert wildflowers in early spring.
